Senior Piping Design Engineer

Full Time Salary

Company Overview D&M is a leader in the defense industry, specializing in the manufacturing and supply of ammunition and propellant solutions. We serve a global client base and maintain an extensive network of international suppliers to deliver high-quality, mission-critical products and systems.

Job Summary We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Piping Design Engineer to join our engineering team as a hands-on individual contributor. In this role, you will personally develop detailed 3D piping models and P&ID diagrams for factory installation projects involving both in-house engineered systems and procured equipment. You will integrate process piping, electrical conduit, plumbing/utilities, and controls elements while clearly defining battery limits for clients. This senior-level position requires strong technical execution with minimal support — you will perform the modeling, diagramming, and integration work directly. Some domestic and international travel will be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently create and maintain detailed 3D piping models in SolidWorks, including routing for process piping, electrical conduit, and standard plumbing/utility systems.
  • Develop, review, and update Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) to accurately define process flows, equipment integration, instrumentation, controls, and battery limits for client factory installation projects.
  • Integrate in-house developed systems as well as procured third-party equipment into overall plant designs, ensuring compatibility, constructability, and proper interface points.
  • Incorporate controls elements (instrumentation, valves, and automation tie-ins) into both 3D models and P&IDs.
  • Perform clash detection, design reviews, and constructability assessments directly within the SolidWorks environment.
  • Generate detailed drawings, isometrics, material take-offs, and technical documentation for fabrication, installation, and client deliverables.
  • Collaborate with project managers, manufacturing, and other engineering disciplines to resolve design issues and optimize system layouts for international projects.
  • Adapt designs to varying international client specifications, site conditions, and regulatory requirements.
  • Travel occasionally (approximately 15-30%) for site visits, supplier coordination, client meetings, or factory installations, both domestically and internationally.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field (or equivalent combination of education and extensive experience).
  • 15–20+ years of progressive, hands-on experience in piping design and engineering for industrial or manufacturing facilities, with significant expertise in 3D modeling and P&ID development.
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D piping modeling and routing (including process piping, electrical conduit, and utilities). Experience with SolidWorks P&ID or schematic tools is a strong plus.
  • Solid understanding of piping standards, codes, and best practices for industrial process, utility, and plumbing systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to define battery limits and clearly delineate scope/interfaces between in-house systems, procured equipment, and client facilities.
  • Experience integrating controls and instrumentation into piping designs and P&IDs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to execute complex design work independently as an individual contributor.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation and presentations for internal teams and international clients.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally (valid passport required).
  • U.S. Citizenship required due to ITAR/EAR regulations governing the defense industry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in the defense, aerospace, chemical, or energetics (ammunition/propellant) manufacturing sectors.
  • Familiarity with defense industry regulations, safety standards, and export compliance (ITAR/EAR).
  • Knowledge of international engineering codes and practices.
  • Experience with additional plant design tools or SolidWorks add-ins for piping/plant layout.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification is a plus.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience and a comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, vision, 401(k), etc.).
  • Opportunities for professional development and career growth within a growing defense technology company.
  • Collaborative environment focused on innovation and supporting critical national security programs.
  • [Add any additional perks, PTO, relocation assistance, or other details here.]

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and value diversity in our workforce. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
